November 2006           NCRS Perth Chapter meet and Judging

Well the time has come around for us to depart Sydney to Perth with 6 Judges and 2 wives being, Murray & Wendy Forman, Colin & Pam Woods,Richard Stones,Andrew Mavin, Ron Barrett, (Wendy is a Level 2 Judge as well as a wife) Wendy, Pam & Kris did the Tabulation,to do the first Chapter Meet to be held in Perth.

On arrival in Perth, we met up with 2 other Judges being Charlie Spiteri and Richard & Kris Dickens and then we hired our "BUS" and drove to The Bentley Motor Inn, (just down the road from the judging venue), very handy. At the Motel we met up with Colin Morris & Terry Martin, NCRS Members from WA, who decided to stay with us at the Motel.
It was great to meet up with the guys again after the Melbourne Convention, we had a few beers & champs, but unfortunately jet lag set in and we hit the sack.
Up early Friday morning, breaky at The Britanica which is a fully English cafe/restaurant. Only 1 minute walking distance across the road from the Motel. After breaky we all load into the "bus" and head for the Cannington Greyhound Club where the venue was.

Here we met up with Lee Anne & Bill Mair, at this point in time I must say that Lee Anne & Bill have done an absolutely marvellous job in organising this venue, the food for the Judges and Members. Congratulations to you both for a very successful Chapter Meet.

LeeAnne and Bill in conjunction with the WA Corvette Car Club also arranged a Show & Shine on the Sunday at the same venue. They arranged approx 54 cars to attend this Show & Shine display. It was a little unfortunate that the Red Bull Air Race was on the same weekend, this detracted a lot of spectators away. But still the public response was excellent.

Now, sorry to diverse, back to the Chapter Meet itself.

They had already arranged the 5 cars to be judged into the hall. The cars were:

Terry Martin's silver 66 coupe
David Alder's black 66 convertible
Colin Morris's red 74 coupe
Richard Geiger's beige 61 convertible
Zeljko Sunjich's red 89 coupe

Murray was the Event Chairman as well as he judged some cars. To start off the Chapter Meet, Murray held a Power Point Presentation where he explained how NCRS operates and how the Matrix System works. After this presentation, we had a question/answer session then onto the judging of the cars.

Murray had decided to do the both 66's on the Friday, then the other 3 cars on the Saturday and the Operations on all cars on the Sunday morning.

Judging started on the Friday and we were able to complete both 66 cars on that day. After which, Lee Anne & Bill had arranged to meet at Hamburger Hill where the WA Corvette car club met us and then we drove to "The Duckstein Brewery" in Henley Brook.

We were all warned that the meals were large, but Colin & Andrew made the mistake of ordering the "PORK SHANK" and I must say this would have to be normally a family meal, it would have to be approx 1metre square slab of pork meat. Both of them had their fill and LeeAnnes puppy got the rest, none the less excellent food and company. We all had a great nights sleep after that sumptuous meal. Saturday morning, off to the Britanica for breaky, Wendy decided in her wisdom to try the Faggots (which are bacon, liver, onion & spices wrapped in a parcel) extremely yummy, BUT Wendy says ' ONE IS ENOUGH FOREVER" .......
Then back to the venue for a full days judging on the remaining 3 cars. The days judging went excellent, we were able to complete all cars and start the Operations on the both 66's before finishing up. Saturday night we went to Ridleys Museum with the WA club again. This is a privately run car museum, there were a lot of early Australian cars. There were Kingswoods sold to Mazda that were sold in Japan as Limousines with rotary engines installed by Mazda, also there were early Opals which were the same shape as fast-back Toranas and early Commodore plus all Holdens, Fords and Chryslers. It was great to meet up with more of the WA club members there. We danced Rock N Roll and all had a great night.
Sunday, breaky at Britanica (no more faggots for Wendy), Murray went earlier to the venue and started & completed the remaining Operations on all cars. The Show & Shine cars started to arrive and set up outside and also inside the venue. There was a yellow 2006 ZO6, a 1973 502 that had only just arrived the night before, and the centre attraction was "Elvis Presley's 1957 Corvette" which was owned by Elvis & used in the movie "Blue Hawaii" and other movies.

The NCRS Judges were asked if they would mind judging the Show & Shine cars, of course they did . Murray, Richard, Andrew, Colin and Tim were able to complete the judging in time for the Presentation at 3pm.Wendy & Pam & Kris tabulated these results as well.

Murray decided to conduct the NCRS Presentation of Awards before starting on the Show & Shine event. The Presentations are as follows.

3 x Second Flight Awards and 1 x Third Flight Award was presented. The quality of cars in Perth is outstanding and now owners will be presented with information from the judging sheets to improve their cars to the next level at the next Chapter Meet in Perth (TBA).

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the WA Corvette Car Club for their assistance with this venue and this Chapter Meet, it is greatly appreciated. The work that the WA NCRS Members put into this Meet was outstanding. Congratulations to both Clubs, this may be an annual event where both Clubs can interact with Corvette enthusiasts.

At this point, I want to thank the Judges and Tabulators who attended this Meet at their own costs to make this event a total success, without their dedication, this would not have happened. Thank you all.

November 2006           C1 Body on School
Well the time has come after 12 months of seperation to reunite the body with its chassis. It has been a long wait but finally they are "one" again. We had a total of 14 NCRS members and visitors attended on Saturday 11th and 8 on Sunday 12th Nov,2006.

The tricky part of this operation was the installation of the steering column and gearbox. This procedure took a little while to install into the body, due to the tight proximity to the inner guard, but after perseverance we were able to install without any damage to the paintwork.

We then had to wheel the body on its trolly to the hoist, where we were able to lift the body from the trolly into the air, we then wheeled the chassis from its resting place over to the underside of the body on the hoist, using an old fashioned "plum bob" we were able to locate the exact position of the chassis to the body. Then we slowly lowered the body down to meet up with the chassis, installing the adjusting shims at all the fixing points.
We then installed the hoist under the chassis and lifted the two parts up in the air to get access underneath. At this stage we can now check every fixing point and either install or remove the shims to suit the contact between the two items. After we were happy with the shimming process, we then bolted them together to complete the body-on procedure.

There is still a long way to go, with the installation of the mechanical, interior and exterior equipment to bring the car back to its glorious condition as it was back in 1954.

I would like to thank all the NCRS members and NSW Corvette Car Club members who turned up to participate in this grand event.

Special thanks go to Andrew Lewandowski, our NSW Corvette Car Club President and Tracy our Secretary for attending this event.

It is great to see that the both Clubs can join in and share in this event. This is where NCRS is able to show NSW corvette members the mechanical side of their corvettes.

My intention as President of the NCRS Australia Inc.Chapter is to work alongside the Australian Corvette Car Club members so we can all appreciate the different facets of The Corvette.

I will give you an update as the 1954 progresses.

Once again I would like to thank everyone who attended and participated in this Body-On School and we look forward to many more in the future.

April 2006           NSW Corvettes Unlimited Convention, Penrith NSW

Up early for breakfast and off to the judging field to place our cars in position for the Show & Shine event. After getting all cars in position, I then waited for Lon LeMaster to arrive as it is his 1963 silver roadster that is being judged at this exhibition. As the time moved on and I began to panic, the phone rang it was Lon. OH NO, he had been pulled over by the long hand of the law. The officer didn't like his interpretation of a NSW licence plate, and made him change it back to the original one, that has both sides bent up so it fits into the plate area. Luckily there was no fine and Lon was able to continue on to Penrith.

On his arrival I ushered him into position where the judging exhibition was to take place. After thanking him for bringing his car for judging and getting his permission for the Judges to inspect his car and holding a Judges meeting, the judging began. Both these procedures have to be done prior to any judging event.

In NCRS we judge five areas: 1) Interior, 2)Exterior, 3)Chassis, 4)Mechanical and 5)Operations. We require two Judges per section and the normal duration for judging is 4 hours. Each car starts with a total of 4510 points. The Judges then start deducting points for incorrect items that are on the car. All Judges are supplies with an itemised Manual on the section they are judging. In most cases, one Judge will read the manual and the other will inspect the part in question. This procedure is carried out on all four areas, leaving the Operations till last.

The maximum points allocated are:

Interior = 790

Exterior = 1020

Mechanical = 1240

Chassis = 700

Operations = 760

Total Points = 4510

We then reward our members by giving them a maximum of 9 points for having these items in the car:-

1) NCRS window sticker

2) Fire extinguisher

3) Battery cut-off isolator switch

Then we reward the owner and give 1% per 100 miles driven to the event.

After we make all the deductions and add on the extra points (as above), we divide it by 45 giving us a % out of 100.

The Awards are scored as follows:-

75 to 84.9 Third Flight

85 to 93.9 Second Flight

94 and above Top Flight.

With all of the above information, the judging continued on Lon's car. Murray was able to explain the procedures to enquiring bystanders.

We were able to complete all four divisions in the acquired time where we then went on to the Operations. The Operations are a list of 30 items ranging from starting the engine, 15 checking the choke operation, right through to locking and latching all doors and glove box compartments. If the vehicle fails ANY ONE of these items, it is an immediate 25 point deduction. So the Operations part of the car can either make or break the Award possible.

Lon's car was a good choice for the exhibition where it has given the Judges good experience on a 1963 roadster. At this point, it is only fair that I am unable to disclose his result until he is notified. Lon will receive, with his Certificate & Ribbon, 19 x A4 pages ofJudging Sheets with every deduction and with a full explanation of why the deductions were made. He can then use this information to improve his car if necessary, or he can leave it as it is, the choice is his to make.

At the end of each section, the Judges take the owner aside and fully explain every single detail of any deduction, so he can agree or can dispute their decision. If it is a dispute, it is taken to the Judging Chairman on that day where the final decision is made. At this time all documents have to be signed off by the two Judges, the owner and the Judging Chairman. After this, the documents are then handed to the Tabulator for scoring. This then is re-checked by the Judging Chairman and signed off once again.

A Judging Summary Sheet is then sent by the Judging Chairman to America for their records, because you have to be an American Member of NCRS for your car to be judged in Australia. Also an Events Judging Sheet is sent to America with all Judges and Tabulators names, to be recorded on their records, and points awarded accordingly. As you progress as a Judge or Tabulator, you receive a badge with a Level that you have achieved. I.e. Level 1, Level 2, etc. up to Level 400. I hope this report explains what the NCRS Judging procedure is about. If you have any questions, I will be more than glad to assist. I can be contacted on eagleviews@bigpond.com

On behalf of NCRS Australia Inc. we would like to thank the NSW Corvettes Unlimited Car Club Inc. for the opportunity to exhibit our Judging procedures at their 18th National Convention.

February  24-25-26th               Come Thunder Down Under Chapter Meet in Melbourne

POST EVENT WRAP UP

For those folks that did not have the pleasure of attending our second Chapter Meet, the guys in Melbourne did a fantastic job in organising this event. I would like to personally thank both Jim Gramms & Lou Rokas for the outstanding effort and dedication they gave to putting this event on and make it the success is was. The second NCRS Chapter meet was held at Sandown Race Course inside one of their pavilions. It was fully carpeted and air conditioned and a real pleasure to judge in, especially in comparison to our first event which was held outdoors on grass and luckily no rain.

We had 14 cars this year, 3 of which were sportsman cars. They ranged from 1958 through to 1991. We were able to get 4 Top Flights, 4 Second Flights and 3 Third Flights as follows:

Top Flight awards:

1966 Louis Rokas Top Flight

1982 Peter Grech Top Flight

1984 Ronald Barrett Top Flight

1964 Wendy Forman Top Flight

Second Flight awards:

1972 Chris Farrer Second Flight

1991 Jim Gramms Second Flight

1958 Charlie Saliba Second Flight

1972 Peter Wiston Second Flight

Third Flight awards:

1969 Steve Busuttil Third Flight

1974 Martin Kilbane Third Flight

1969 Charlie Spiteri Third Flight

Sportsman awards:

1993 Terry Ruse Sportsman

1993 Richard Stones Sportsman

1990 Roy Sinor Sportsman

It was great to see the high quality of cars that were presented this year. I can only see the NCRS movement here in Australia growing and moving forward in the years to come. Our membership has increased in the last year and we are now in the 60's and growing and interest in the chapter and for the NCRS judging process continues to expand and grow within the Corvette enthusiast community across Australia.

As mentioned in my report which follows, the entertainment on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights were absolutely fantastic and it capped off a perfect weekend of events.

I would like to thank our International visitors from America, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand for their efforts and expense they occurred to attend our Chapter Meet. Also another big thank you to the Western Australian members, our Tasmanian member, and our Queensland members that made the long trek to the event, and not forgetting our Canberra, Melbourne and of course Sydney members as well. Without all of you, it would not have been the success it was.

Check out the Photos section for some more post event pics

March 2006 - Come Thunder Down Under - President's Post Event Report

Well the day has arrived for us to travel to Melbourne for the second Chapter meet for NCRS Australia Inc., our American friends have arrived and we are all loaded up into Wendy's 1964, Murray's 1990 and the Family Shopping Cart (MERCEDES BENZ) and Colin & Pamela Woods in their (F**D shopping cart).

Wendy & Murray are in the 1964,  Roy and Cheri Sinor are in the 1990, Ralph and Sharon Ridge are in our Merc and Colin & Pam in their F**D shopping cart .  We drove down the hill to the BP service station, refueled the cars . The arrangement was to meet Ron & Deb Barrett and also Richard & Yvonne Stones at Windsor. As we drove across the North Richmond Bridge we noticed smoke coming from under the front guards of Wendy's 1964,  OH NO !!!!! something is dramatically wrong here.. so we pulled over and gathered in a driveway to find that we had completely seized the front brakes of the car. We proceeded to cool them down with water & nappies (cleaning cloths for the cars of course). After 1.5 hrs ordeal we were eventually able to free the brakes. Then we de-adjusted the brakes with everybody's assistance and advice. By the use of the cell phones, we were able to contact Ron & Deb, also Richard & Yvonne who were waiting down the road for us, they came back to where we were.

Eventually we head off for Queanbeyan. Ron & Richard needed to fuel up for the journey, so we went to Penrith Mobil station where Wendy decided to top up also, BUT ALAS !!!!!!! the brakes seized but again.... So, embarrassingly announced to the station owner I couldn't move my car, took the wheels off again, readjusted the brakes and YES !!!! off we go at last.

Because of the lost time, we were supposed to meet Bill Axias and Steve Busittil at Pheasants Nest, Murray contacted them on the cell and told them to go straight to Queanbeyan where we would meet them.

Once we arrived at Pheasants Nest and had breakfast, we all headed off to meet up with Terry & Karen Ruse in Queanbeyan. Murray then spoke to Bill & Steve and instructed them to head towards Merimbula where we were all staying for the night.

On arrival at Queanbeyan, we met up with Terry & Karen  then on our way to Merimbula.  It is ironic that we have now 2 cars in our convoy, Richard and Terry's 1993 roadster Collectors and after Murray had checked their VIN numbers, found that both these cars were approx 600 numbers apart. So here they are 13 years later travelling in a convoy, where they were in a queue, on an assembly line , thousands of miles apart, to be together again.

We left Queanbeyan heading south to Cooma then headed east down Black Mountain to the coast towards Merimbula. It was an eerie experience coming down Black Mountain where the clouds had dropped to the ground in front of you and were travelling across the road faster than we were travelling. The car in front of you would dissappear into the grey mist with just the ember of their tail lights to go by.  Roy has taken some great photos of Wendy's silver 64 in front of him, disappearing into the mist AWSOME , at the same time Murray  took photos of Roy's 1990,behind us, in the side mirror GREAT SHOT.....

On arriving at Merimbula we met up with Steve & Bill who had settled into their bungalows. After everyone was settled into their accomodation, the arrangement was made to catch the shuttle to the local golf club for dinner. What a surprise to us and especially our American guests to find kangaroos grazing all over the golf course, hundreds of them (yes, we have photos). The food was spectacular, the company was excellent. On arrival back at the bungalows, having a couple of night-cap drinkys, we heard an outcry of help from Bill & Steve's room......(not mentioning any names of course) someone had left their CAR KEYS which was towing their corvette , at the restaurant on the window sill..... So, Murray gallantly leant his Merc to the rescue and he was pleased to report they were just where he had left them.

In the morning, Steve & Bill left early (because they were towing their car), we were able to get the convoy together and all headed for Melbourne.

Approximately 1.5 hrs out of Melbourne, Murray noticed that the 1964 (Wendy's) amp meter was showing a very high charge rate. So it was decided to run into Melbourne with the headlights up & on. This then reduced the charge rate down to 5 amps. We had just installed a BRAND NEW reproduction AC Delco battery before the trip, to our HORROR on arrival at Melbourne accomodation, the battery had been boiled dry & melted.  WHAT NOW ?????  have to but another replacement battery for the show.

Friday morning: early for the start of the Chapter Meet. The first part of the Meet was a power point presentation carried out by Roy Sinor at the Sandown Regency Motel. This was attended by approx 50 people, where Roy expalined the operation and judging of the NCRS organisation.

Friday afternoon: we headed off for Sandown Race track where we were to start judging cars that had been set up the night before. There were 14 cars, being 11 to be Flight judged and 3 sportsman. They ranged from 1958 through to 1993.

Friday night: was our Welcome Dinner at the Sandown Hotel (just down the road), what a great night, fantastic food and especially all the NCRS members made it perfect.....

The first day of judging was concentrated on the C1's and C2's. The second day was on C3's. The third day was C4's and Operation checks on all cars.

We found the quality of cars was outstanding and we were able to get 4 cars Top Flight, 4 cars Second Flight and 3 cars Third Flight.  Leaving the 3 Sportsman Awards.

At the Show we had an exhibition of some of our sponsors being Vigil Insurance, who spoke to the members about insurance and how they can help them. Also another sponsor who had a C6  ZO6 on display and what an awsome piece of machinery it was.

On the Saturday afternoon: the weather turned BAD, we had organised the public to come in and invited the local Melbourne Corvette Car Clubs to attend our Show & Shine, we found ourselves in the middle of a mini-cyclone with winds that tore roofs off, branches off BIG trees sprawling them all over the place. Thank heavens our judging cars were inside, because outside was trashed completely.

At this time, I would like to thank Louis Rokas and Jim Gramms for the tremendous work they both put in to the organisation of the spectacular event.

Saturday night: we all loaded up into a coach and headed off for a spectacular night at the TITANIC Restaurant, WOW what a night.

Being a Theatre reastaurant, and the re-enactment of the sinking of the Titanic, they put on a wonderful show. I must report there were no lives lost at sea on this night. ha ha ha...

Sunday morning: up early as usual, off to the judging field. Today we judge C4's and Operations on all cars. We were able to complete this task by 3-30pm in time to prepare for tonight Presentation Dinner on the Yarra River.

We were blessed with good weather and the vessel took us on a journey of spectacular sights. Heading out into Port Phillip Bay and across to Williamstown then back to the dock, during which time our Presentations were made and we were able to run a small auction to raise money for the Chapter. the food and service was of high quality and everybody had a good time......

Monday morning: after saying a sad farewell to our buddy's and a safe journey home,  a small group of us prepared for a trip to the Great Ocean Road.

Murray headed off to pick up the mini bus for this trip, where we all went to Sandown Racetrack to pick up the Corvettes, then we left them in storage at the Club house of the Chevrolet Car Club of Victoria, who we thank very very much for looking after our babies.....  from there we travelled on to Apollo Bay, staying the night there and being graciously entertained by Louis and Venessa Rokas at their holiday house. Thank you for a wonderful night of food, drink and laughter.

Tuesday morning: off we go to the Twelve Apostles, what a sight, they are breathtaking and a perfect photo oportunity for all.

Our next venue is called The Fly which is an elevated walkway into the tree tops of a rainforest, in the middle is a tower that rises 60-80 metres up into and above the tree tops.  A bit scary if you don't like heights but otherwise completely safe and enjoyable. Lunch at the restaurant there and travel to Ballarat for the night, where we saw the show called the "Blood on the Southern Cross" being a story of Eureka stockade. I must admit, at this stage, I had never really understood the real story about the Eureka stockade, but after seeing the show I now truly appreciate what had actually happened on that fateful night.

Wednesday morning: we had a free day where everyone did what they want to do. So we decided to go to the Animal Park where we were met by overwhelmingly welcoming kangaroos, they were so cute. Our American friends really enjoyed the closeness and being able to hold and pat all the animals there.

Thursday morning: return to Melbourne, pick up corvettes and shopping carts, head off to Albury where we stayed the night. Enjoyed the Bullring Restaurant  at the Siesta Motel and had a good nights sleep.

Friday: return to Sydney and all reflected on our fabulous NCRS Chapter Meet in Melbourne.

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in this our second Chapter Meet in Australia. The participation of our Western Australian, Tasmanian, Victorian and Queensland and New South Wales members, we appreciate you efforts to attend this Meet. We also must thank our American & New Zealand Members who have come all this way to join us in our second Chapter Meet.

We are in negotiations as we speak, to hold our next NCRS Chapter Meet in THE GOLD COAST, BRISBANE.

The dates will be  APRIL 5th through to the 9th, 2007 (Easter weekend). More information to follow.

I also would like to inform you  that we are considering holding our 4th Chapter Meet in TASMANIA at the Wrestpoint Casino in 2008.

Could you please come back to me by email eagleviews@bigpond.com , those who are interested in the 2008 Meet.

I hope  you have enjoyed my report and look forward to our next Chapter Meet in 2007.

June 11th, 2005             Charity Run Murray & Wendy

On behalf of NCRS Australia Inc, Murray & Wendy took their 2 corvettes to a fete where 2 television celebrities arrived by helicopter and we took them in our corvettes from  the helicopter to a presentation area (stage). The organizers wanted to pay us in some way, so we decided to accept a cheque made out to The Royal Flying Doctor Service, who is our nominated charity in NCRS Australia Inc.

September 3rd, 2005       Body Off School – Louis Rokas

We held a Body Off School on Louis Rokas’s 1954 where we removed the body completely off the chassis. Dismantled the body ready for stripping & repainting.

The chassis was left here at Murray & Wendy’s place for further work to be carried out. On completion of repairs to the chassis and the final paintwork on the body, we will hold a Body Back On school (TBA). In attendance were 7 members who all participated in the event.

September 24th, 2005              Body Off School – Peter Steve

This is our second Body off school on Peter Steve’s 1955, where we removed his body from the chassis only by 300mm just enough to carry out inspections and repairs to the chassis and body. Peter had driven his car from Queanbeyan on the Friday afternoon, he stayed with us the night and we completed the event on Saturday, he was all finished and on his way home that afternoon. He reported that he arrived safely home and that the car was performing much better and was much tighter in it’s operation (no more squeaks and rattles).
